“Hello, Nancy. How are you today?”

“I am very well, thank you for asking. How is Bill?”

Pretty boring, eh? Does anyone actually talk like that? Let’s try this again.

“Hey, Nancy. What’s up?”

“Not much. How’s Bill?”

This second attempt is unlikely to win any awards, but at least the pacing is much more realistic.

What are dialogue tags?

The most common dialogue tags are “said” and “asked”. These words describe how dialogue is spoken, and can include fancier words like “exclaimed”, “shouted”, or “pontificated”. But please don’t use “pontificated”.
